The Accelerating Cancer Screening program at BRMC consists of a devoted team with a focus on prevention and early detection of commonly seen cancers.  Our Patient Navigator and Program Coordinator work diligently for our patients to ensure they have access to Breast Cancer, Cervical Cancer, and Colorectal Cancer Screening services.

Who
Women ages 40-75

What
Mammograms are x-rays of the breasts that can detect tumors which may be too small to feel.

When
The frequency of mammography varies based upon the patient’s personal and family history. The average patient with no personal or family history is typically recommended to receive mammograms yearly.

Where
Mammograms are performed at the imaging facility of the patient’s choice, or on a Mobile Mammography Unit that stations at our Arrington or Appomattox offices.  We partner with UVA Mobile Mammography and Centra Health Mobile Mammography to provide this service for our patients.

Who
Women ages 21-65

What
A Pap Test utilizes a swab to collect cervical cells so that they can be checked for changes caused by the HPV Virus (Human Papillomavirus).  These cells can turn into cancer if left untreated.  The Pap also detects precancerous and cervical cancer cells.

An HPV/Pap Co-test is a single test that checks for high-risk HPV and Cervical cell changes.

When
Frequency of Cervical Cancer Screening varies based upon age, history, and the type of test being performed.  However, frequency typically varies between 3-5 years.

Where
A Pap and/or HPV Test can be performed by your Primary Care Provider, and OBGYN Clinic, or local Health Department.

Who
Patients aged 45-75

What
Colonoscopy: An exam used to look for changes or abnormalities in the colon and/or rectum.  Stool Based Testing: Detects signs of Colorectal Cancer in a stool sample by looking for blood/DNA changes that might indicate the presence or risk of cancer.

When
The frequency of testing varies based upon the method of testing utilized and upon your personal/family history.

Where
Colonoscopies are typically performed in an outpatient endoscopy/surgical center. Stool Based Tests are performed in the comfort of your home and a specimen is mailed to the lab for processing.
